What Happened To Mafia Wars?
Mafia Wars was a text based mafia game created by Zynga: mainly played on Facebook but also available on various other social network platforms, such as MySpace and others. Below we will explore the rise and fall of Mafia Wars. As well as answer if there are any games like Mafia Wars today.
The Rise of Mafia Wars
Mafia Wars was first released in 2008, and quickly gained a massive following thanks to its engaging gameplay and social features. Players could form their own mafia families, compete in battles for territory and resources, and engage in other criminal activities. The game's success was largely due to its accessibility and the social nature of its gameplay, which made it easy for players to connect with friends and make new ones. Players were incentivized by in-game rewards to invite their Facebook friends to the game! Quite invasive looking back, albeit an effective marketing tactic.
MAFIA WARS ENDING
In 2016 it was announced that Mafia Wars is shutting down, much to the disappointment of the players. In addition to a social media announcement, players received an in-game message, and the game was taken offline: shortly after midnight on June 7, 2016.
It was relaunched on mobile in April 2017. However only a few months later in July, players were notified of Mafia Wars ending again. Reason being that "it wasn't meeting performance expectation", according to Zynga CEO Frank Gibeau. It proved to be the end of the series.
